This would be the most disheartening problem of all the gold detecting world, and that is lead, it has the same sound characteristics as gold so as you can see you can dig some extremely deep holes for nothing, after you have dug a dozen of these for the day unless you found a heart starter, then some days you just don't want to know about it.
