So much rubbish

Littered all around most of the goldfields in Victoria are huge amounts of rubbish, some places like Inglewood have been used as illegal rubbish dumps, its not the only place with rubbish everywhere but its one of the worst I have seen, But the good part about that is that people get discouraged from looking in these areas due to the amount of rubbish, so if you can persevere you have a good chance of picking up some gold.

Kingower

Looking through the scrub at Kingower sometimes has its rewards although it has been flogged for years, every now and then you will pick up a piece of the elusive yellow metal. Sometimes you can pay for your petrol, other times you might just find some interesting relic or coin from the past just to keep you interested and sane so you don't wrap the detector around a tree. This is where the Hand of Faith was found in 1980 and the welcome stranger (the biggest nugget in the world) was found a few kilometres away. I was using a Gp3500 in this photo, one of the Minelab range, there are a few new models since then but basically they are all the same and if you were starting out I wouldn't suggest buying the latest detector due to the price, but settle for a 2100 or something around the $1500 price so you can get used to how they work and sound and if you are up to the task, as its not easy. Better still get a few friends together and hire a new detector, share it, take turns one digging, one detecting etc. That way you can split you costs and also your finds.

What discourages you.

This would be the most disheartening problem of all the gold detecting world, and that is lead, it has the same sound characteristics as gold so as you can see you can dig some extremely deep holes for nothing, after you have dug a dozen of these for the day unless you found a heart starter, then some days you just don't want to know about it. But gold is bazaar, it will lure you back again and again, it will make you dig these holes even if you have had enough, Because when you find a piece of gold even 1 or 2 grams, the adrenaline flows and kicks you off again. Beware once you start you will never shake it from your system.
